it is team all the way! - GWOC results

Posted Saturday, October 16, 2010 by Mike Hout
I just finished officiating at a wedding with the signing of the license and the pictures.  After breaking away from the festivities I ran to the computer to see the rest of the results from this morning's GWOC meet.  How exciting to see all the great marks.  What a great day for teamwork and the team of boys and girls from Miamisburg.  One can't help but be inspired by the amazing effort of runner after runner working to help the team.  They say over and over again that there is no i in team.  No one showed this better than the harrier TEAM from the 'Burg.

I knew the guys won the GWOC south before I had to leave the meet, but I was thrilled to see Miamisburg boys finish second overall in a conference that is known around the state as a premier league.  Go boys!!!  Quentin Mullen stepped up big time in leading the team to such great heights.  For the second year in a row Mr. Mullen ran a pr race when it counted - at the GWOC championships.  Congrats to all the varsity runners who ran personal bests or near personal bests.  They came away with another new school record of 16:42 for the average of their top five runners.  WOW!  Congrats also go to Melvin Johnson who received Coach of the Year honors.  Great work team Quentin, Michael, Donnie, Jonathan, Josh, Elliott and Austin.  No boys cross country team has ever won the GWOC south before!

When the girls lined up they were hearing stories of the amazing boys race.  They didn't say much but just nodded and it looked to me like they were ready to use this inspiration for some good races of their own.  That is exactly what they did as they finished a surprising fifth overall in the GWOC which is especially amazing since they ran without a top runner, Jordan Townsley, who is recovering from an injury.  Their team average of 20:48 ranks as one on of the top team performances in school history.  After Jenna's pr race of 19:39 the Burg girls packed runners 2 through 5 within nine seconds of one another to seal the surprise placing.  That's right, nine seconds for four runners.  Talk about a pack.  Talk about TEAM!

Not wanting to be ignored, our JV runners went out and gave it their best also.  Congrats to Cody McKinley on his new pr of 17:59.  This makes a solid statement for his inclusion on the varsity team at next week's district meet.  Here's the biggest surprise.........Cody won the South portion of the reserve meet!  big Big BIG congrats to JV League champ Cody McKinley!  Stephanie Jensen also made a mark for herself in the girls race with yet another giant pr....21:46.  She led the girls with a 5th place finish in the south division of this reserve race.
