Miamisburg Harriers qualify two squads to the regionals

Posted Sunday, October 24, 2010 by Mike Hout
We didn't exactly have the kind of results we wanted but we can still be proud of the fact that we qualfied both our girls and our boys team for the regionals to be held next week at Troy.  It will be tough running as our southwest section of the state can be regarded as the toughest area for high school cross-country running.  Yet, our girls and boys enjoy a challenge and look forward to next week's race.

Our girls might have wanted more but a third place finish at the Districts is something to be proud of.  They finished behind last year's state runner-up, the Springboro Panthers.  Beavercreek also slipped in ahead of our girls but it is fun to look back and see Northmont and Butler in our rear view mirrors, as well as a number of other teams.  We were led by another personal record run by Jenna Parlette.  Her 19:28 time placed her fourth overall behind the new course record of 17:54 by Carly Hamilton.  Jenna's mark also moves her up to third on the all time Miamisburg girls cross-country list, just ahead of former Viking great Lauren Lunsford.

The boys went into their race with the dreams of a District championship, since they had beaten the favorite Beavercreek team on three occasions this year.  It was not to be as the Creek pack was very tight while our pack stretched out quite a bit from the previous week at the GWOC.  Burg was led, again, by Quentin Mullen.  Elliott Zech ran the closest to his pr and finished fourth on the team!

There were a few anxious moments when, after the race was over, coach Johnson was called over to talk with the meet official.  The OHSAA is very strict about uniformity and they do not allow different colors of underarmor on a team.  Several of our athletes run with white.  Some run with no underarmor.  At this meet, though, we had one athlete with black showing.  Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the final results were posted and our team was not disqualified.  We will try to learn from this!

Here's a Sunday afternoon addition.......after church I had a few moments to look at the sports section and there was a nice picture in the Dayton Daily New of Kiggins, Mareno and our very own Michael Melko.  I think this was somewhere around the mile and a half mark.  Just behind Melko you can see the right eye of Quentin Mullen.  Ironically, Melko's black shorts are quite visible.  It also appears that the white of Mullen's shorts are visible in the picture!

Here are the results of the District meet:

And here is our Ohio Milesplit site that has a web page for every runner:
