famous people who ran cross country

Posted Tuesday, November 22, 2011 by Mike Hout
I was up late the other night and watched the movie about Harry Houdini, the famous magician and escape artist.  While reading more about him the next day I discovered that he ran cross country in his younger days.  On Wickipedia there is a picture of him standing with a lot of his medals on his sweatshirt.

This got me to thinking about what other famous people ran cross country.  I know that the singer Alice Cooper ran a mile in the 4:30's in high school.  I can guess that he ran xc.  Looking on google I found that Robin Williams was a harrier and ran near a two flat 800.  Luke Wilson had 400 and 800 records at his high school.  Brad Pitt supposedly ran a 1:55 in the 800.  Dana Carvey is mentioned as running under 4:30 in the 1600.  Tom Cruise was also supposedly a distance runner.

When cha-cha was asked about celbrities that were cross country runners the following names were listed: actor Cuba Gooding Jr.; reality star Rob Kardashian; Office star John Krasinski; Illinois governor Pat Quinn; and late miler Steve Prefontaine (duh).

I am going to continue to research this.  It sounds like an interesting topic for the off-season.  But why aren't any females listed anywhere?

ps.........I am still looking for some female celebrities who ran xc in hs.  I have yet to confirm any but there are lists of female celebrities who ran marathons including Oprah Winfrey (4:29:20-probably the most publicized),  Meredith Baxter (4:08) and, get this, Joan Van Ark (3:35) for an 8:12 per mile average!
